Supanova Pop Culture Expo 2009 Sydney: Karl Urban Entertains the Crowd

Star Trek's Karl Urban entertains the eager audience with anecdotes. He was chatty, entertaining and interacted well with the crowd. Being a fellow Antipodean did not hurt. Well worth the price of admission!

One humourous anecdote Karl related to filming Star Trek, where Chris Pine [Kirk] had trouble finding the portoloo, but was busting for a wee and went outside to make use of the wall and was pinged by a telephoto lens. The issue was not his "business hanging in the breeze" so much as the uniform going public, as they were working under strict secrecy and the like.

One joke Karl told:

"Why do Australians put Fosters on their [beer] cans? Because they can't spell 'XXXX' ! "
[XXXX (said 4-X) is a competing Australian beer brand to Fosters.]

Being a Kiwi, Karl is in the loop on things Ozzie. He also rubbed in the recent NSW series loss to Queensland in the State of Origin series (rugby league).

8x10 format

Unfortunately, the image quality is poor due to the lack of light on Karl (he was sitting in a shadow), a high ISO, my being in the back of the room and using a point-and-shoot digital compact at maximum zoom (so slower aperature).

I tried a bit of a high-pass filter to clean it up slightly, but there was never going to be much image-quality goodness in this shot.

I grabbed a better shot of Karl when queing for an autograph (still to come).

Mrs.Thomas and I decided to invite some friends over. We have never really done much 'entertaining' so it was a new experience for us. We invited some of our friends, but only the 'Cachews' and Conleys where able to make it. It was still great fun.
This is definitely something we should do again.
I snapped this picture sometime during the evening as a quick candid shot.
